Thai street food will become your breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It may take you outside of your comfort zone but that is the whole point of traveling! Plus, the street food is cheap!
Seafood/Meat and Refrigeration:
Rules for refrigeration in Thailand are not as strict compared to the US or parts of Europe. You may see fish or raw meat sitting out or not on ice for longer than usual, but don't let this stop you! The food is fine and you will not get sick! Just Eat It!
Soups:
The different soups are all amazing and definitely worth a try. Just remember that they use tap water (their tap water is not drinkable) when creating many of their broths, so if you experience an upset stomach or diarrhea just stop by a local pharmacy to pick up some digestive pills.
Smoothies:
The same tip for the soups above go for Smoothies as well. Don't forget, they make smoothies with ice (tap water) so be prepared to have any pills necessary to help with any digestive issues! In the long run, it is still worth it to try the smoothies. Thailand has some of the freshest Mango's which make for an amazing Mango Smoothie!
Spice:
Thai Street Food is your chance to try amazing dishes you can't get at home. Most of their dishes are not spicy, but can easily be made spicy if you tell them you would prefer it that way. Tom Yum is a very popular dish that guarantees some spice if you want to try a favorite locals dish!
Insects and Scorpions:
Don't freak out. You are going to see food stands (usually in the night markets) that have crickets, worms, roaches, and scorpions. To be honest, it is worth a try. When else will you ever get to eat this?! The crickets have a nice crunch to them and could honestly make for a great snack on the go. The Scorpion wasn't my favorite, but I'm still glad I tried it!
Some of My Favorites!
Everyone has different dishes that you "must try" while in Thailand, but then again everyone has different tastes! See below for some photos and insights into my favorite dishes!
Pad Thai- Yes it seems obvious, but this is truly some of the best Pad Thai you will ever have! Squeeze fresh lime on top and you will be in heaven. This was a dish I could have had (and most days did have) for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Most importantly, it's cheap! On the street you can get a plate of Pad Thai for as little as 60 Baht! ($1.88)
Spring Rolls- You can get spring rolls for 10 Baht a pop! (30 cents) They are the perfect snack or appetizer and if you get enough of them it can be considered a meal!
Pineapple Fried Rice- It's exactly how it sounds. They cut open a pineapple, scoop out the insides, mix it in with delicious fried rice, and then use the pineapple as a bowl to hold the rice.
Tom Yum- This is not something I tried while in Thailand, but many of my friends have had it and raved about it. I do not handle spice well so this curry based dish was not for me, but it is supposed to be a delicious, flavorful, spicy, and comforting dish that both locals and tourists have come to love.
