Don't Leave France Until You Have Eaten These Items:

Updated: Jun 13, 2019

Macaroons

I am sure you have tried them state side, but nothing is as good as a French Macaroon. When visiting my friend in Cannes, his little sister brought me to a small little pastry shop on a hidden street. We walked in and the entire front display case of this pastry shop was dedicated to macaroons. It was like looking into a delicious rainbow, except you could eat it. Her and I each bought a box of 6 and we mixed up the flavors. They are fresh, light, and melt right in your mouth. It is a must, so treat yourself and buy a box!

Breakfast at Marlon's House

Croissants:

You better get used to eating these because, along with chocolate cake, this is going to be your breakfast every morning. And yes, the French love to eat chocolate cake for breakfast, that was not a typo. Croissants come in different flavors, shapes, and sizes. Some are stuffed with fruit while others are drizzled with chocolate and powdered sugar. Either way, eat them because they will not taste better anywhere else.

Cheese:

The first time I walked into a French cheese shop, I had to step right back outside to catch some fresh air. The smell is very strong and potent, but this is where you will find the best cheese in your life. Now, as Americans we do not always eat the most potent cheese, but in France, mold is gold. The moldier the cheese, the more flavor it has. It took me a few taste tests and dinners to get used to it, but by the end of my stay there I was a mold connoisseur. This is also due to my friends mother not letting me leave the table until I tried every single cheese! Thank god for her or I would have never realized what I was missing!

Crepes:

Crepes can swing both ways, you can have a dessert crepe or a dinner crepe. Most of the people selling them on the street will sell dessert crepes, and I highly recommend getting one every single day while there. Hey, why not, you are in France, treat yourself! Inside some restaurants or cafés you can find dinner crepes. I had never had one before, but my friend Marlon would not let me leave until I tried one. I ended up getting the equivalent of a cheeseburger inside of a crepe. Sounds gross right? Nope, it was absolutely delicious and If you magically come across this burger in a crepe... BUY IT.

Pizza:

Yes, I know what you are thinking. “Shouldn’t Italy be where the best pizza is?”. Well, anyone can argue with me on this, but some of the best pizza I had was in France. While I loved Italy’s pizza, France has the best bread and the best cheese, which are two out of the three ingredients you need to make a pizza, so I’m sorry Italy, but France wins on this one.

Bread/Baguettes:

As I mentioned in my pizza comment, France by far has the best bread. It is soft and light and so flavorful that it puts any other countries bread to shame. There is no need to put butter on it, turn it into a sandwich, or dip it in oil because this bread is so good it can be eaten alone and still be delectable.
