Don't want to check a bag? Only want to bring a Carry On? Here are some tips for Packing Small.

Updated: Jun 13, 2019

Want to take your trip without the hassle of large luggage? Here are some tips for packing small, especially when you are trying to stay under the weight limit!

Roll Your Clothes!

Roll your shirts, shorts, and pants up like burritos! It is amazing how much room you can save by simply rolling your clothes instead of folding them flat.

Lay out everything you think you need/want, and then get rid of half of it.

No matter the vacation you go on, I promise you that you will over pack. A great tip, no matter if you are going to a cold or warm place, is to lay out everything you need and then get rid of half of it. If you go on a 10 day trip, you do not need 10 shirts! You can always re-wear items so 3-5 shirts should definitely be enough.

Keep your clothes Smelling Fresh!

Now I know what you are thinking: "If i re-wear my shirts won't they begin to smell?" The answer is YES. Below are 3 great tricks to keep your clothes smelling fresh, especially when cramped in a tiny suitcase.

  1. Bring Dryer Sheets- Dryer sheets can easily fit in your suitcase and are light weight, so there is no need to worry about them taking up room. Be sure to keep them in a Ziploc bag to help preserve their smell. As your trip goes on, and you are traveling from point A to point B, you can stick the sheets in between your clothes within your luggage to help keep everything inside smelling fresh!

  2. Buy a 3oz bottle of Febreze Fabric Spray To Go- You can find this at your local Target or online. It is small enough to be brought on a plane and will easily last you your entire trip.

  3. Wash your clothes! If you plan to stay somewhere for 2-3 days, when you arrive on the first day any clothes you need to wash you can simply grab some soap and clean them in the sink or even in the shower with you! Hang them up to air out and by the next day or two everything will be dry and ready to go back into your suitcase. Obviously this would not be easy to do if you are staying in hostels, but if planning to stay in a hotel or Airbnb then you can definitely do this!

Choosing Your Shoes: Always try to kill two birds with one stone!

If you are trying to save room in your suitcase, try and bring shoes that are multi purpose. Most places you go, you only need 2 pairs of shoes maximum.

If it is somewhere cold then a pair of sneakers and a pair of boots will most likely be enough. (Bringing hiking boots would help in both the snow and any other outdoor activities you plan on doing.)

If you are going somewhere a tad warmer, but you still plan to do outdoor activities, then a pair of sneakers and one pair of sandals is enough. Sanuk Sandals are great multi-functional shoes. They are made out of yoga mat material making them great to walk in for long distances, convenient for hiking, and most of all are super comfy! They are also waterproof so for any water activities, or even just a trip to the beach, they are the perfect shoe.

  • Travel Tip: Whichever the heavier pair of shoes are would be the pair you wear on the plane to help keep your carry on under the weight limit.
