Travel Advice & Tips

The Bicycle City

This city is unlike any other. The intertwining rivers give a hint of Venice, the bicycles add a touch of Germany, the mixed languages remind you that your are in a melting pot of a city, and the old leaning buildings can take you back to a previous era.
I always find it funny that the one place where almost every single street looks exactly the same, is one of the few places where weed is legal. It really makes it hard for a tourist to find their hotel when every street looks the same as the next, and the weed doesn't help!
Coffee Shops:
Amsterdam is littered with them. Now, some truly just sell coffee, but most sell pre-rolled blunts or joints right at the counter. So if you are trying to find a multi functioning "Coffee Shop", trust me it will be easy to find.

The Bicycles:
Rumor has it the rivers in Amsterdam are 3 feet of mud, 3 feet of bicycles, and 3 feet of water. With thousands of people riding them everyday, and definitely more of them on the road than cars or boats, they are the main form of transportation around this city. But, they are also the most deadly! Riders do not care if you are in the way and will run you right over, so definitely look both ways before crossing the rode. I mean honestly, death by a bicycle accident would just not be the best way to go.

The Leaning Buildings:
So this jam packed city is filled with tall skinny buildings which almost look like they are about to fall over. They lean towards the rivers and all have large hooks on the very top story of the house. We came to find out that these hooks were used to pick large items, such as furniture, up off of the boats and in through the windows on the higher floors. Due to the building being tall and very skinny, bringing it up a staircase would just be impossible. And this, my friends, is why every building in Amsterdam looks as if it is the leaning tower of Pisa.

The People:
One of the best parts about Amsterdam, is it is made up of a melting pot of people, cultures, and languages. You are surrounded by people of all types and all backgrounds. Due to this, and I'm sure also due to the weed, no one cares about who you are, where you come from, or what you look like. You can be anyone who you want to be in this city, no one will judge you, so go have a Heineken and make some friends.
