Must Do's When Visiting Hannover, Germany

Updated: Jul 12, 2019

Rent a Bike: This city is known for it's green space and parks. Get a bicycle and ride around for the day, it truly is the best way to see the city!

See a Hannover 96 Soccer Game: The Hannover 96 soccer team may not be the best in Europe, but they have a amazing fan base. Between the endless chants sung throughout the stadium, the masive drums being beaten the whole game, and the bottomless beer you will most likely partake in, you are going to have a great time. Definitely worth buying a ticket and going to see them play.

Have a Drink at The Dublin Inn: As a local student, The Dublin Inn was our go to spot when we needed a refreshing beer or to watch some rugby. This bar is known for both its Karaoke night as well as its Weiss Beer! When walking out the front door of the Dublin Inn, the first thing you will see is Marktkirche church.

Marktkirche Church: This church sits right near The Dublin Inn, so be sure to stop in for a pint after visiting here. Marktkirche Church was built in the 14th century. This is considered one of the main land marks within Hannover and is located in one of the older parts of the city.

Herrenhausen Gardens: With its gorgeous landscaping and massive size, it would be a mistake to not take a stroll through these gardens. Certain parts of this garden have a similar resemblance to that of Versailles. On a nice sunny day, this is the perfect place to go for a run.

Aegidienkirche Church: This church is a true reminder of the destruction this city went through after being bombed during World War 2. This gorgeous structure has no roof but instead only four walls. Standing inside of this building is sad yet peaceful. I truly recommend visiting this when passing through Hannover. It is also located right near Kröpcke, so you are only a few steps away from city center.

Kröpcke: City center is marked by an old clock, if you found this clock you have made it to central Hannover and to Kröpcke. In this section of the city you are surrounded by local stores, bars, and restaurants. A few hundred yards away is the Hannover Hauptbahnhof which is the main train station within the city.

Have a BBQ: Germans absolutely love picnics and barbequing. On a sunny day you will find hundreds of people filling the parks with mini throw away grills, blankets, bratwurst, and beer. It is an essential part of the culture, and Hannover is filled with parks to choose from.

Leibniz Universitat: If you have any interest in seeing the main university in Hannover, and also the school I attended for 5 months, then make your way over to Leibniz Universitat. It is located directly across from a gorgeous park which on sunny days is filled with people barbecuing and drinking beer.

New Town Hall: New Town Hall, which sits in a gorgeous park surrounded by endless green and a quiet pond, is another major landmark within Hannover. On sunny days you can find many BBQ’s taking place as well as Swans surrounding the pond out back. Inside of the Town Hall are 4 display cases. These are a must see. Each case represents a different year before during and after the war took place. It gives a detailed representation of the distruction the city went though after being bombed. These cases, while sad, truly cause reality to set in and reminds you of what this city has been through. The architecture of the building itself is also a sight to see. This building is one of the only in the world to have a curved elevator. Take it to the top (yes you will feel yourself tilt back) to see a beautiful view overlooking Hannover.

Maschsee: Take a walk along the Maschsee Lake. Not only are there small restaurants along the water, but many water sports (such as canoeing and kayak races) take place on this body of water.

Faust: If you are looking for a night out in Hannover, you are in luck because this city definitely has a great night life. The bars don’t close until after the sun rises, usually until about 10am the next morning, so get ready for a long night. Faust is a section of Hannover that is considered the Art District. It is filled with theaters, music halls and outdoor art. There is a club within this section, also called Faust, which makes for an awesome night out. It is made up of 3 different rooms all playing different types of music, allowing you to flow throughout each depending on the mood you are in. The dancing is epic and the place is a blast, so be sure to make a pit stop here at least one night!

Havanah: Havanah was by far my favorite place to go in Hannover when I needed a fun night out. It is broken up into two rooms, the first playing Spanish music and the second playing pop hits. If you love Spanish music this is definitely the place for you, but if you don’t like this kind of music then no worries because the second room is always playing the newest hits as well as 90s throwbacks. Within the main Havanah room, the center of the floor is sand, surrounded by a wooden “boardwalk” and the ceiling is glass. It makes you feel like you are dancing at the beach while the sun rises right above you. Havannah is located in a part of town that is surrounded by other bars and clubs, so it makes for a great location as well!
